Layer 1
Also known as L1 base layer layer one
A layer 1 is a base blockchain that processes and finalises transactions on its own network using its own consensus mechanism. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana are commonly described as layer 1 networks. Layer 1 designs make trade-offs between security, decentralisation and throughput. Other systems, called layer 2 networks, are built on top of a layer 1 to add capacity while relying on it for security.
