Rollup

A rollup is a layer 2 design that executes transactions off the main chain, then bundles them and posts the data or a summary back to the base layer. Optimistic rollups assume batches are valid unless someone submits a fraud proof within a challenge period. Zero-knowledge rollups attach a cryptographic validity proof to each batch. Both aim to reduce fees while keeping the security of the underlying chain.
